I found this a bit hard to get into, but after the first chapter it was fine. Although the story was clever and fun it needed some major editing. Usually this doesn't bother me as much as some, but in this instance some of the problems were so egregious I actually had to re-read sentences more than once to get the meaning. Commas where they shouldn't have been, others that weren't there at all and should have been. Reminded me of "Eats Shoots and Leaves" vs "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" - seriously some of the sentences had different meanings simply because of the commas. Frankly, if I hadn't bought the first 4 volumes as a set I'm not sure I would have even considered reading the other books in the series. Fortunately, the editing seems to have improved in the subsequent books in the series.

The positive things it has going for it - it's really rather laugh out loud funny in many places. There are the usual suspects one finds in cozy mysteries - strong but flawed heroine who has either been dumped or dumped a worthless husband, boyfriend, etc. - kookie but (mostly) lovable BFFs - and a setting that becomes one of the characters in the story - in this case Santa Monica, California. The unpredictable parts are the (mostly) transitory characters/souls of he recently departed (murdered), only seen by the heroine because of her somewhat erratic empathic abilities. In the case of these characters most want her to help them find their killer.

Now, if you have read any cozy mysteries you know that most of the heroines become amateur detectives and get in all sorts of trouble trying to help solve the crimes - be that usurping the local police and giving them headaches while they butt into an investigation - or finding the culprit by accident or weirdly accurate revelations that come to them (often while in the personal space of said criminal) while making expressions that show they should never play poker). Needless to say, our heroine, Annie Graceland, does all these things. In addition she often talks out loud to these ghosts, making her look just a little crazy.

I'm going to give the other books in the series a chance - especially since I bought the 4 volume set). A short novella that followed the first story seemed to be better edited, and since it was a novella didn't have as many twists and turns to wade through, so I enjoyed it a bit more - not to mention I was finally getting used to Annie as a character. Overall the book was okay but unless something changes a lot in the next 3 volumes I probably won't be following this series as closely as many others I read in this genre.

A fun take on the baker style mysteries. A heroine who is having one hell of a bad day, a ghost who wont leave her alone and a cast of supporting characters that make you smile. now mix in some recipes with fun comments and this first book is a fun romp.
From the very first page, I was hooked!!! Annie Rose gets the surprise of her life while, with her feet up in stirrups in her OB-GYN's examining room, she's handed a large envelope along with a rose. Well, it is Valentine's Day after all. Thinking her husband, Mike, has done something incredibly sweet by sending her a special gift, she opens the envelope to discover pictures. Not just any old pictures, but pictures of two people having sex. Mike must have managed to take pictures of them together somehow, she thinks, because that is definitely Mike in the pictures. But....wait a minute. That's not her in the pictures with Mike. It's not even another woman. By the time Annie figures out who the other person is in the pictures, that person is dead and his ghost is harrassing her to help him find out who killed him. Endless laughs from beginning to end!!! I loved it!!! ;0
Feeling kinda depressed, I was skipping through a number of book offers. On a whim, maybe it was the kitschy kitchen kover, I decided to try out this first volume of PD's "Cupcake" series.

I found myself howling with laughter. This book turned out to be the perfect cure at a perfectly cheap price for my blues. And the author's wicked humor in no way distracts from the roller-coaster mystery that bedevils our heroine

Now I'm gonna haveta squeeze out some pennies from my entertainment budget to buy the rest of this devilishly delicious series...and even more difficult, find time to read them. So? Sleep is grossly overrated!

Cupcakes, Lies and Dead Guys. What a super catchy book title. Kudos to debut author Pamela DuMond for pulling the title out of the plot bunnies in her book. It's a very catchy title and probably what prompted me to "Click to Buy" from . For only $2.99, I think that Cupcakes, Lies and Dead Guys was a great read.

I was up and down liking Cupcakes, Lies and Dead Guys. One moment I loved it and I was saving quotes and the next I was quickly skipping by. The "recipes" at the end of each chapter became a sure thing to skip past. Here's one of the quotes I saved when the heroine was at a doctors appt. "He picked up a ginormous speculum that looked alarmingly like a .44, and headed towards her hoo-hah."
There were other quirky lines like, "Oddly enough, it had style, it had flare. If this was the eighties, it would've had big hair."

Sometimes I found myself confused with the sentence structure and ended up backing up and starting over. I normally just look past those things when it happens every now and then but I found myself doing that a lot so I am making a mention of it. I was trying to get my bearings in the book. One moment Annie was in the kitchen and then next sentence the author was then describing what disguise her friend was wearing. That's after I figured out that it was her friend that I was now reading about. A little more experience in writing and a good editor should take care of those situations in future books. I do predict that there will be future books.

I think that Pamela DuMond created a cute little series that scores of fans will stay dedicated too. Annie is a likeable character and the obnoxious dead guy Derrick Fuller had enough personality that when he was supposedly moving off to the afterlife, I was sad to see him go.

As for the mystery aspect of the book. I had no idea "whodunnit" and was pleased that I never guessed. After now knowing "whodunit" I really appreciate the clever hints that were placed throughout the book. Great plotting by the author
