This is a book which details the hunting of big game in North America, the woodcraft skills essential to success, and the habits and life histories of the big game animals which are of interest to big game hunters. This book comprises Col. Townsend Whelen’s experiences from a lifetime in the game fields, as well as a compilation from the writings of the most virile, observant, and successful hunters of the time. Col. Whelen devotes a chapter each to a number of North American big game animals where he includes the particulars of hunting each species. The book also includes valuable information on hunting methods, navigation, camping and camp gear, rifles, marksmanship, and even photography while in the field. Lt Col Townsend Whelen (he would eventually be raised to Colonel) was a master outdoorsman and hunter, and this book, written in the 1920s is nice peek at a time long gone...The animals mentioned have not changed that much...(although he says at one point that deer have been wiped out in Delaware. That may have been true then, but is not now) but some really interesting info is in the chapters dealing with camping, the equipment, (The soldier condemns most 'civilian footware' in no uncertain terms) though again, you have to keep in mind you reading advice almost a century old...Whelen was a big booster or hobnails in boots for mountain travel, and even gives you a pattern in which to nail them into your soles, and the type of hobnail too...there were two patterns, one good..one not so good..You MAY be able to still find a shoe repair place still open but I doubt they will be plentifully supplied with hobnails. Nevertheless, the book is wonderfully enjoyable visit to the past, by a man who was a true expert woodsman...

Wilderness Hunting and Wildcraft Townsend Whelen 9780988836853 Books Reviews

Would have liked to have had more specifics on some subjects but, a good read.
Let down feeling after having read references to this fellow by so many other authors. More of a doer than a writer.
This book is amazing. Anyone who hunts ought to be required to read Townsend Whelen. He lived in a real heyday.
Hey, it's Townsend Whelen what could be better. His knowledge of firearms is unbelievable. Having read most of his books including my favorite Mr. Rifleman this book is well worth reading.
I find it very informative to read these older books from the leaders in ballistics and hunting. This book was published in 1927 from one of the best ballistics experts of the time. Col. Whelen favored the 6.5 and the 270 Winchester even though many then or now would steer most hunters away from them because nothing but the best placed bullet will drop wildlife quickly. It's also quite interesting to read as the author will slip his regulatory view point in from time to time. I wonder how they would feel today about what seemed innocent and reasonable then. Col Whelen obviously didn't think the regulations being proposed then would amount to what is being put forth as reasonable now.

Very good briefs on the animals habits and woodcraft of the day and still very applicable today. As Col Whelen has said of the hunting articles of the day so it is in today's articles. Not enough about the habits and mannerisms of the wildlife and too much about the kill. Col. Whelen does a good job of describing the wildcraft of the wildlife to better help the understanding of our natural resources.
It's awesome to read the authors 1920's perspective on conservation and the perceived future of the different game species.
A good reprint edition of an old classic on hunting and camping. Whelen is one of the "real deal"old timers, who knew what he was doing, and designed his own gear as he saw ways to improve. The Whelen leanto, Whelen knife, the improved cartridge designs bearing his name are all landmarks of a long and knowledgeable career.

This is a good read, with some very solid information, even for our modern hunters and campers.
